Want to learn some more about us?
Created just after the end of World War II, in the heart of the Philippines, we started with just one product and just one small workshop to simply produce desiccated coconut. As we started to grow by the 1960s the workshop had become a large factory with a hospital, recreational facilities for all our workers and residences for our managers. We now employ thousands of workers in our factories to create only the finest coconut oil and products for the best price.
Sustainable Coconuts
Coconuts have been used throughout Asia for thousands of years. The coconut tree is known as the Tree of Life. By nature, coconut farming is sustainable as the tree and its fruit are used for cooking, bathing, for shelter etc. The coconut tree has become an essential part of rural life in the Philippines.
At Coco Road we have found new ways to both create products with zero waste while teaching the farmers about the best ways to use all byproducts. When making our Virgin Coconut Oil we also produce Coconut Water, Coconut Milk, Coconut Flour, and Desiccated Coconut which we can sell so nothing is wasted.
Replanting Programs
Coco Road through our Fair Trade program has been supporting farming communities through replanting programs. Simple little tricks like planting the trees in threes is a great way of protecting against loss during our typhoon season, while also creating the space between trees to grow other plants. We have already replanted over 100,000 coconut trees since we began the program.
changing lives
We have always been committed to paying our farmers a fair price, often above what coconut traders and oil millers pay. Some of the other ways we help our farmers are through lending programs. We currently lend to women in the local communities to build small shops, giving them a source of income and independence. This has been our most successful programme with 90% repaying the loans.
We also lend money to farmers to help them purchase a Carabao (a type of water buffalo), a vital part of the process to transport the coconuts from the farms to the depots. Without these loans many cannot afford to buy them. These Carabao can also help generate a second income as farmers can sell the offspring for profit.
The next generation is also incredibly important, so we support the families with feeding programmes to ensure children get breakfast and lunch so they can focus on studying. In less than a year these children return to normal weight. With these feeding programmes we also help parents to understand a healthy and balanced diet for their children.
